Description

Tallahassee, FL- Union Bank of Florida $20 Mar. 11, 1855 G16 Benice PMG Very Fine 20.
The Union Bank of Florida was chartered on February 13, 1833, but after it could not make interest payments on its notes, it was shut down in 1842. Ironically, though it was one of the only Territorial banks to be approved by the Florida Governor William Pope Duval, it quickly became the most fraudulent institution of all state chartered Territorial banks. This $20 features a depiction of a cotton wagon being drawn by oxen at left, Wisdom with an eagle at center, and Hebe watering an eagle at right. PMG indicates there is evidence of a previous mounting as well as pinholes towards the upper center of the note.
