Description

Washington, DC- Mercantile Bank $5 186_ G6 Remainder PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The exact status of the Mercantile Bank is unclear. Newspaper articles in August 1862 reported that it was a bogus bank, closed by authorities who found $120,000 in unissued circulation with another $60,000 in circulation. These reports were followed immediately by protests from the bank that it was legitimate and redeeming its notes. Its legitimacy was quickly a moot point as it closed on November 19, 1862. The bank used notes printed by W.L. Ormsby that featured a wonderful face tint that changed gradually from red to black to green. The $5 design also features a Native American family gazing at a plow, a symbol of the advance of "Civilization." PMG mentions a penciled "10-" on the back which affects nothing. Of the thirteen examples of this note recorded in the PMG Population Report at present, only one is recorded in a higher grade.
