Description

Seaford, DE- Diamond State Bank $1 Feb. 15, 1866 G2a PMG Very Fine 25.
The Diamond State Bank was organized very late in the state bank era, being initially proposed in 1863. The process of subscribing stock began on July 3, 1863, but it appears that the bank did not actually commence operation until 1866 when it almost immediately appeared on a list of banks whose notes were refused by Philadelphia bankers and brokers. This panic apparently subsided as the bank was still in business until about 1867. It is presumed that the 10% tax on state bank circulation and the general banking environment, given competition from national banks, may have contributed to the decision to close the institution. The note reflects the high level of design accomplished by the 1860s, with a detailed view of the fishing fleet accompanied by a vignette of a hunter warming his hands over a fire. A red ONE protector panel completes the design. PMG mentions very minor evidence of previous mounting on the back.
