Description

New Haven, CT- Mechanics Bank $5 18__ as G48 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was chartered in 1824 and remained in business for over a century as a state bank until closing its doors on June 9, 1932, by order of the State Bank Commissioner during the Great Depression. The $5 design features an allegorical woman representing a water goddess and an allegorical man representing Architecture flanking a column containing a 5 at center. FIVE DOLLARS appears in an end panel to left and Hope appears at right. A small rendition of the Connecticut coat of arms is at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with two POCs in the signature lines and appears to be the example once residing in The John J. Ford, Jr. Collection. There were no examples of this design in complete Proof form (three $5 Progress Proofs appeared in Lot1585) in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, nor did Haxby list the design in Proof form. Quite possibly one of only three known, with the survival of the other two unconfirmed.
