Description

Houston, TX- Republic of Texas $5 ? 31, 1837 Cr. H1 Medlar 27 PMG Fine 12.
Authorized by an Act of Texas Congress passed on June 9, 1837, this piece was part of the very first emission of Republic of Texas notes. These representatives paid ten percent interest exactly one year from the date of issuance. Ornate lathework panels and borders and a large Lone Star at upper center are focal points of this example which bears Sam Houston's clerical signature. While this piece will not win many beauty contests, with cut cancellations and obvious edge damage, it is an extremely scarce note. In fact, we have auctioned just seven examples of this Criswell number prior to now, with the note in this lot marking the eighth representative.
