York, PA- York Bank $5 18__ G88 as Hoober 468-12 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The York Bank was organized in 1809 and remained in business until 1864 when it was succeeded by the York National Bank which was chartered on December 6, 1864. The note features a custom vignette of West Market Street in York which is flanked by portraits of Charles Barnitz, the third president of the bank at left and of John Schmidt, cashier of the bank during the 1820s, at right. It is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines which is, in turn, attached to a Danforth, Bald archive book card. There was one uncut sheet of four examples of this variety in the holdings of the ABNCo Archives dispersed in 1990. A premium grade example with a large custom vignette.
