Description

Charlotte, NC- Bank of Charlotte $5 Aug. 2, 1860 G8b PMG Very Fine 20.
The Bank of Charlotte was incorporated in 1853. The exact timing of its demise is unclear but was likely within months of the end of the war, certainly from a practical standpoint. The $5 design features farmers breaking new ground with a two horse-drawn plow at left, a female portrait, taken from life, at top center, a vignette of a hornet nest at bottom center, and a vignette of an allegorical woman by a column with a banner inscribed UNION. A number of red design elements including the bank title, FIVE and V protectors, and a bicolor red and black denominational counter complete the design.
