Description

Ithaca, NY- Tompkins County Bank $20 18__ as G10 Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ.
The bank was incorporated in 1836 and remained in business until succeeded by the Tompkins County National Bank of Ithaca which was chartered on September 18, 1865. The $20 design features an allegorical woman seated with a shield and, improbably, a sledge hammer and saw. This is flanked on both sides by a helmeted oval cameo-like medallion head 20 counter and an end panel containing another oval cameo-like medallion head. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines. There were two examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale which may account for the entire surviving population of this type in Proof form. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection.
