Gem Uncirculated "DIX" Note with Breathtaking Orange-Red Color
New Orleans, LA- Citizens' Bank of Louisiana $10 186__ G26a
Remainder PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 65 PPQ.The Citizens' Bank of Louisiana was one of the longest lived and most successful banks in the state. It was organized in 1833 and remained in business until the expiration of its charter on January 30, 1911. It was immediately succeeded by the Citizens' Bank and Trust Company of Louisiana. This note often gets credit for being the inspiration for the song Dixie. The song was written about a year before the note design was even printed, so that credit is misplaced. However, many $10 Louisiana notes had bilingual text, including the word "Dix" (Ten in English). The note, nonetheless, retains its widespread popularity based on its artistic merit and visual appeal. National Bank Note Company's design included a large ocean-going steamer vignette and a portrait of Louisiana Governor Andre Bienvenu Roman, who served two terms from 1831-35 and 1839-43. Lavish use of red ink to act as an anti-photographic counterfeit deterrent adds greatly to the appeal of this note.
