Description
Mansfield, LA- Desoto Parish $2 Apr. 21, 1862 PMG Very Fine 25.The note in this lot could either be redeemed for dues owed to the parish or for Confederate Treasury Notes when presented in sums of $20. At first glance, our current offering appears to be emitted by the State of Louisiana, but the Desoto Parish text denoting this piece's issuer is located at upper left. At far left is a depiction of George Washington standing, and at center, a federal eagle with olive branches and arrows in its talons is observed alongside an arrangement of tools and symbols of various deities. These include a beehive representing Industry, a cornucopia representing Ceres, and a globe representing Navigation. The design is completed by a large red outlined "TWO" overprint and a small vignette of a sailing vessel at lower center. Examples of any denomination from this parish issuer do not cross our auction block often. PMG comments on tears, but these minor faults can be overlooked when considering this piece's rarity.
