Description

Berwick's Bay, LA-H.E. Lawrence at P. Cazenave/Citizens Bank, New Orleans 25¢ Dec. 26, 1861 PMG Very Fine 20.
Berwick Bay is located about 85 miles west of New Orleans and was the place of issue for H.E. Lawrence who issued scrip payable at either P. Cazenave (who is listed as a commission merchant in the 1861 New Orleans city directory) or at the Citizens Bank (of Louisiana) in New Orleans. Lawrence was a wealthy planter who apparently also ran a ferry business (he issued notes for this enterprise). He had a business relationship with both Cazenave and the bank. The note, printed by Jules Manouvrier, who also produced the Type 12 $5 CSA Treasury Note, features a steamboat and a green TWENTY FIVE protector. End panels contain H.E. LAWRENCE at left and the denomination at right. OR CITIZENS BANK, / New Orleans has been added to the original design. The note has a tiny piece of the upper margin at center replaced, which is of little significance. Rare with only a small handful of examples known.
