Description

Syracuse, IN- Bank of Syracuse $1 18__ G2a Wolka 2305-03 Proof PCGS Banknote Choice Unc 64.
The bank was organized in 1854 and remained in business until 1857 when it began the process of voluntarily winding up its affairs according to State Auditor records. An interesting newspaper article dated December 19, 1860, indicates that the bank (along with several others) continued in business after relinquishing its free bank charter and replacing its state securities which were withdrawn with a personal bond given to the Auditor. In light of the perilous financial conditions occurring in late 1860 due to the impending national crisis, the bank's notes still in circulation were thrown out because the security provided was a personal bond rather than state securities. The $1 design features a large vignette of drovers trying to get a herd of cattle across a river at left and another of a tall bridge over a stream at lower right. The state free banking die is at top center and a large red ONE protector spans the bottom portion of the note. Printed on India paper with four POCs, this note was one of ten examples appearing in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. PCGS Banknote mentions a closed needle hole just to the right of the state free banking die.
