T23 Confederate Treasury Note Tie Obsolete
Savannah, GA- Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah $10 Feb. 1,
1859 G8a PMG Very Fine 25.Similar to the $5 from this bank which we are also presenting in this auction, the plates created for this $10 were donated to the Confederate Treasury so that they could produce the T23 Confederate Treasury Note of 1861. Our current offering, which bears the dual imprint of Bald, Adams & Co. and Bald, Cousland & Co., thus appears nearly identical to the T23. At left is a portrait of John Elliot Ward, a staunch Unionist who served as president of the bank for a time before moving to New York to practice law at the outbreak of the Civil War. The portrait was once thought to be a depiction of Confederate Senator Williamson S. Oldham from Texas, however, an article published in a 1917 issue of the Numismatist settled this controversy. At center, a horse drawn wagon hauling cotton bales is commandeered by laborers, and at right, a farmer gathers corn during the harvest. This right vignette is entitled The Corn Gatherer. A large red "TEN" overprint and a family of ducks finishes the design at lower center. Both the $5 and $10 notes bearing layouts later employed on Confederate Treasury Notes do not often cross our desk. When they do, they are always highly contested for. Recently, we auctioned a PMG VF 30 representative of this type which brought $960 in October 2025. No significant condition detractors have been mentioned by PMG on this handsome piece.
