Description

Savannah, GA- Central Railroad of Georgia 5¢ Sep. 1837 PCGS Banknote Choice Fine 15.
The enterprise was founded in 1833 as a railroad and canal company, but soon set its eyes on banking and changed its name to the Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia in 1835 to reflect that additional focus. The line was completed in 1843, running 191 miles from Savannah to Macon, GA. The company survived the Civil War and eventually was acquired by Southern Railway Co., now part of Norfolk Southern Railway. While the Civil War era scrip from this issuer is periodically available, the early 1837 dated issues are not. At present, we are aware of only three examples of this 5¢ that was good for the passage of one person for one mile on the railroad, and one of those is impaired.
