Description

Atlanta, GA- Bank of Fulton $50 18__ as G16a Proprietary Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The Bank of Fulton was incorporated in early 1856 and, for all intents and purposes, had ceased active operations by as early as September 22, 1866, when its banking house was sold at public auction for $11,900. Interestingly, that building is shown in the lower right corner of this note. A legal furor was raised when the purchaser attempted to buy the building with the bank's own circulating notes which he attempted to use for the transaction. The design, originally executed by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, additionally features Liberty and Ceres at center and a large portrait of Andrew Jackson at lower left. A decidedly non-period pinkish overall tint and pink and white FIFTY protector complete the design. This is a Proprietary Proof printed from the original plates by ABNCo. for various corporate projects and programs in the 20th century. The exact number printed is unknown, with one source estimating a surviving population of only 3-4 examples.
