Description

Washington City, DC- Farmers and Merchants Bank $20 18__ as G28a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The Farmers and Merchants Bank was organized in 1851 and remained in business until 1863 according to some sources. Apparently, Smithson was considered a southern sympathizer and was arrested and initially imprisoned in January 1862. Reading between the lines, he was at least temporarily released before being convicted in late 1863 and receiving a term of five years in prison. Apparently, this sentence was commuted as there is a December 1864 notice that Smithson was calling a meeting of his creditors on January 2, 1865. This all means that there may have been a narrow time window in 1862-63 when notes were still issued. While some sources estimate a surviving population of three to four examples, your cataloger believes that the number is even smaller - perhaps only one example of this variety in Proof form which, unlike the Whitman plate note, makes no mention of being payable in current bank notes (See lot 201 1990 ABNCo Archives sale description). The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock which is, in turn, mounted on a Danforth, Bald & Co. archive book card. There are six POCs in the signature lines. the PMG Population Report lists another example, but it is quite possible that this is the other variety of the same base design.
