Description

New Haven, CT- Mechanics Bank $5 18__ G52 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
The bank was chartered in 1824 and remained in business for over a century as a state bank until closing its doors on June 9, 1932, by order of the State Bank Commissioner during the Great Depression. The $5 design features three allegorical women seated, representing The Arts, Agriculture, and, perhaps, Knowledge at center. Two oval cameo-like medallion head 5 counters flank this vignette and two ornate FIVE end panels as well as a small arm and hammer vignette at bottom center complete the design. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines. One uncut sheet of four examples of this note appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and Haxby lists and illustrates the note in Proof form, suggesting a potential surviving population of around five to eight Proofs.
