Hartford, CT- Bank of Hartford County $5 18__ as G8 PCGS Choice About New 58PPQ.A search of period periodicals has failed to locate any references to the American Bank which several modern day sources indicate was the predecessor of the Bank of Hartford County. The Bank of Hartford County is first mentioned in September 1852 and the activites mentioned such as the selection of a location for the banking house and calls for installment payments on stock seem to suggest that it was being organized during the fall of 1852 under the Bank of Hartford County banner. The bank continued its business until it was succeeded by the American National Bank of Hartford, which was chartered on May 18, 1865. The $5 design features Danforth, Bald & Co's popular train vignette used by many banks in one of several versions. The state free banking die is to the right and a small vignette of a female in water is at bottom center. One of the bank note company's trademark anti-tampering features appears at right. Patented by Cyrus Durand originally, the number of engraved bands was equal to the denomination of the note. In this case there were, of course, five bands. Printed on India paper, the note has eight POCs in the signature lines. There were sixteen examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
