Description

Hartford, CT- Farmers & Mechanics Bank $5 18__ G20 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was organized in May 1833 and remained in business until becoming the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Hartford which was chartered on June 22, 1865. The $5 design features Commerce and Agriculture by the Connecticut coat of arms. This is flanked by two oval cameo-like medallion heads. Both end panels have a vignette of a woman holding a trident. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with rectangular cut outs in the signature spaces. There were three examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and Haxby was aware of the design in 1988 when he listed and illustrated it in Proof form. This suggests a surviving population of notes in Proof form of around four to six examples.
