Description

Bridgeport, CT- Merchants Exchange Bank $1 18__ as G2a Proof PMG Choice About Unc 58.
The Merchants Exchange Bank was organized in 1856 but never legitimately opened for business. Notes that had been printed were repurposed and issued fraudulently. The design features a large center vignette of a boilermaker taking a break flanked by an allegorical vignette of Agriculture seated at left, another of a passenger train at right, and a small vignette of a dog at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines. This variety, with no tints or protectors, was only represented by three notes in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and is much scarcer than the tinted version.

Estimate: $200 - up.
