Description
Excessively Rare Post Civil War Era State of Arkansas Ace
Little Rock, AR- State of Arkansas $1 Feb. 24, 1869 Cr. 60 PMG
Choice Fine 15.Similar to the State of Arkansas $1 emitted under the Act of March 16, 1871, which we are also offering in this auction, the ace in this lot, which was issued under the authority of the Act of July 23, 1868, is extremely elusive. Notes of this series bore eight percent interest and could be used to pay for all dues and taxes owed to the state, with the exception of those "on account of the School fund." The designs of both our current offering and the other aforementioned $1 are alike, with a basket of corn at left, farmer reclining with his scythe at center, and cotton boll at right. The protectors, border, and back, however, have been applied in green ink on the note in this lot, rather than the brown ink which characterizes the other piece. The clause at center on the back is also comprised of different text to reflect different terms. In his 2007 book A Guide Book of Southern States Currency, author Hugh Shull and other experts speculated as to whether any notes from this issuance were put into circulation, as all surviving examples known at that point were unissued. Our current offering indicates that at least some representatives were in fact emitted. A grand total of two notes of this design and denomination have crossed our desk previously, with one of those being the piece in this lot, and we are aware of one additional representative which served as the plate note in Shull's catalog. We last auctioned this exact note in October 2021 for $1,200. That price is where we will estimate now, but we would not be surprised to see our evaluation bested tonight.
Estimate: $1,200 - up.
