Description
Charleston, SC- Soldiers' Way-Side Home at Bank of Charleston $1 May 1, 1864 Sheheen 844 PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.The Soldiers' Wayside Home is mentioned in several newspaper articles of the day and was apparently a facility offering assistance to CSA soldiers in need. From reading the accounts, it seems that it was along the lines of a USO facility, as we know it today, and was part of the statewide network of so-called Wayside Hospitals which started in Columbia in 1862. The notes were redeemable at the Bank of Charleston in currency in sums of $10 or its multiple. The note has a green decorative back and was redeemable in July, 1864. An interesting Civil War fiscal item.
