Description
Corporal Austin Fenn, 10th Vermont Infantry, Company H, Autograph Letter with Cover Not graded.Near Culpepper Court House"; September 25, 1863. Addressed to his wife, with content on General Rosecrans. It reads in part:
"...still here in our old camp...today we are to be ready at a minutes notice...The old Vt. Brigade passed here...I saw Albert Beckwith and Sewell Hale...I hope I shall get the box soon...for I want some good tobacco. I have chewed poor stuff most long enough...I received a letter from you with 6 stamps...Glad to hear you was well...Lyman has gone...he had better keep going. He wont find many to worry themselves about him. I dont believe he has cot a big slug in the Ass...We...don't expect to stay here long. I dont see why we dont move...we could clear our road clear to Richmond. Rosecrans has been fighting all Gods creation and part of Satan's kingdom besides, and has been obliged to fall back aways but when he gets his reinforcements he will come out all right yet..." Accompanied by original transmittal cover.
Fenn mustered into Company H on September 1, 1862 and mustered out as a Corporal on June 22, 1865. His regiment was incorporated with the Army of the Potomac and saw action at the Wilderness, Orange Grove, Spotsylvania Courthouse, Cold Harbor and the Siege of Petersburg. After being transferred to Sheridan's army, the regiment was engaged at Monocacy, Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek. It rejoined the Army of Potomac in 1865, participating in the capture of Petersburg and Richmond and standing witness to the surrender of Lee's army at the Battle of Sailor Creek. (Total: 2 items)
