Description

1847 Slave Content Letter Not graded.
The verso of the letter reads "Mr. John Morgan/Kenawha County-Virginia/Pocatalico-Post Office." Also handwritten "for mail" with a postal rubber stamp of "Xenia." Kanawha County is located in present-day West Virginia which, of course, was part of Virginia until 1863. The Pocatalico post office was established in 1828 and lasted in service for just over a century. Seeing as how present-day West Virginia abuts Ohio, your cataloger is making the bold assumption that the circular postmark was from Xenia, Ohio.

Addressed to John Morgan, regarding interest in the sale of a young slave. The letter reads in part: "...I have not supposed that anything further was necessary from me relative to your & Maurices interest in the negro boy Dug - than the explanatory receipt I gave to Wm Sigler, but have no objections whatever to giving any kind of receipt or acknowledgement. I have fully recd John M. Gowdy's interest in sd negro - enclosed you will receive a paper that I suppose will be quite all that is necessary..."
