Description

Jackson, TN- Jno.(?) C. Taliaferro at Bank of Tennessee, Trenton Branch 25¢ April __, 1862 Very Good;
Nashville, TN- Central Bank of Tennessee, Paris Branch $1; $5; $10 1855 Very Fine or Better.
The Jackson note is tentatively attributed to Jno. C. Taliaferro. This attribution is based on interpretation of the signature which is probably close but probably not exact. Surprisingly, Taliaferro was a somewhat common surname in the area. There is a manuscript endorsement on the left end, indicating that the note was redeemable when presented in sums of $5. This 25¢ note is very similar to a number of other stock scrip notes on the Bank of Tennessee at Trenton, but does not appear to be listed in Schafluetzel under this exact issuer name. There is damage on the right end but the note is repair-free.
The Central Bank was chartered in 1855 with branches in Dandridge and Paris. It failed in 1859. Many remainder sheets were subsequently utilized to produce fraudulent alterations purporting to be issues of other banks. The $1 features slaves loading a wagon with sugar cane, the $5 has a wonderful large vignette of the Battle of New Orleans, and the $20 has an allegorical woman reclining with an eagle with a city and railroad bridge in the distance. The $10 has a tiny bit of ink erosion that just touches the top frame line due to the Cashier's signature. All three notes are fully issued and repair-free. (Total: 4 notes)
