Description

Hernando, MS- Hernando Rail Road and Banking Company at the Mechanics & Traders Bank, Cincinnati $20 Post Note 18__ G26a Kraus 10380 Remainder PMG Very Fine 30.
This railroad and banking company (undoubtedly much more involved in the latter business) was in business from roughly 1837-40 before failing. This post note was payable in Cincinnati, 500 miles away, to slow down redemptions. Such maneuvers were sure signs of a highly leveraged fragile business. The design features an oval cameo-like medallion 20 counter at center flanked by a vignette of Hebe watering an eagle and a Native American woman seated on a bale holding a shield. Ceres stands at right. A decorative red-orange back completes the design. PMG mentions some toning which is not particularly bothersome
