Description

Richmond, VA- Bank of Richmond $10 Facsimile 186_ Jones-Littlefield BR85-20 Contemporary Reprint PMG Choice Extremely Fine 45 EPQ.
The Bank of Richmond burned to the ground on April 3, 1865 during the fire which swept portions of the business district. This note has generally been portrayed as being printed, slightly modified with promotional text by Alfred L. Sewell in Chicago shortly after the end of the Civil War, from the original plate which was "...taken from the ruins of the Fire in Richmond." Your cataloger believes that there probably was no such legitimate plate found, and that this was likely an immediate post war fabrication 'a la S.C. Upham 's more famous facsimiles. The design is not particularly well done, even by Hoyer & Ludwig standards whose imprint appears on the note. The most likely scenario is that this was a fantasy, produced in Chicago from a new plate made around mid-1865, and sold by the master marketer, Alfred S. Sewell for the benefit of the Sanitary Commission. An interesting artifact which is still scarce, with Jones estimating 10-24 surviving examples.
