Description

Chicago, IL- Chicago Marine & Fire Insurance Co. $3 18__ Remainder PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
The company was incorporated in 1836 and was initially prohibited from issuing paper money. During the Panic of 1837, the company resorted to issuing "certificates of deposit" beginning in May 1837. In 1849, the company split itself into banking and insurance divisions and in 1861, the banking operations were transferred to the Marine Bank of Chicago. Your cataloger suspects that the company's original name was purposely chosen to confuse it with the very successful Wisconsin Marine & Fire Insurance Co. The note features a warship in harbor at center with a vignette of an allegorical woman standing at left holding a cornucopia and another of an eagle at right.
