Description

Miscellaneous correspondence related to the work of G.F.C. Smillie: Included are: (1) receipt for donation to the Library of Congress, dated Dec. 3, 1924, and addressed to Mrs. G.F.C. Smillie, acknowledging the donation of 21 etchings and engravings by her husband and others. Smillie's engravings include portraits of Woodrow Wilson (2 different views), U.S. Grant, William H. Taft, Cyrus McCormick and Dr. Wm. Oseer. This typed document is signed by M.A. Roberts, Chief, Division of Accessions; (2) acknowledgement letter on Smithsonian Institution stationery to Mrs. G.F.C. Smillie upon receipt of her donation of 208 items, including tools and specimens produced by her late husband. The letter is typed, dated March 19, 1926, and signed by A. Wetmore, Assistant Secretary; (3) two-page note in ink, unsigned but in the hand of G.F.C. Smillie on "No. 18 Treasury Department" note paper describing several published engravings which were the work of other hands than those credited beneath the printed work. This note sheds light on the factory system at work in the late 19th century where work was undertaken on a production line tempo with various artists contributing to the final product. Engravers mentioned include Charles Burt, Asher Durand, Charles Toppan, Alfred Jones, and S.A. Schoff.; (4) note, unsigned but in Smillie's hand, critiquing the "New Peace Dollar" dated January 7, 1922. Smillie was unimpressed with the coin. For example he wrote: "Head all out of proportion, showing hydrocephalic symptoms," and reverse "misshapen and ugly." Smillie has many more choice but negative comments on the coin that is widely heralded as a masterpiece of design; (5) another small note is stapled to the Peace dollar critique, on which Smillie calculates work days on an unknown project. All items are Fair to Fine condition. The larger pieces have been folded for posting. (Total: 5 items)
