Description
An incredible grouping of original manuscript items relating to the rise and fall of Canada Bank Note Co., and the Canadian career of William Cumming Smillie: Included are: (1) a 10-page holograph document entirely in the hand of William Cumming Smillie, that was a copy of his account of the founding of Canada Bank Note Company. It commences: "In 1864 I began a correspondence with an old Quebec friend of my boyhood on the question whether the time had not arrived for Canada to sustain a Bank Note Company." Smillie goes on to relate the establishment of the firm in 1882 with a capital of $100,000. He served as vice president for seven years before cashing out for a $50,000 settlement; (2) a one page printed capital stock offering for one thousand shares at $100 each, dated Nov. 1, 1882, providing for the establishment of Canada Bank Note Engraving and Printing Company by William C. Smillie; (3) a printed letter on Canada Bank Note Engraving & Printing Co. letterhead, dated August 1886 and marked "Confidential," relating to the awarding of a government printing contract for stamps; (4-5) two holographic pages in ink labeled "Notes," in G.F.C. Smillie's hand, regarding an interview Smillie conducted in January 1887 on the failure of Canada Bank Note Co. to secure a government printing contract; (6) one-page holograph note dated May 7, 1887, by William. C. Smillie naming his nephew G.F.C. Smillie his proxy at a stockholders meeting of Canada Bank Note Company; (7-11) five notes or short letters related to W.C. Smillie's business dealings in Canada, including one from his accountant and agent, many in original covers; (12) an envelope with seven small newspaper clippings dated 1887 regarding the awarding of bank note printing contracts in Canada; G.F.C. Smillie has written his April 1887 Canadian travel itinerary on the envelope in pencil; (13) a May 1887 note from an insurance adjuster acting as his agent to G.F.C. Smillie; (14-15) a two-page holograph copy of two letters, dated May 13, 1887, between J.M.M. Duff and CBNCo President George E. Desbarats regarding the financial difficulties of Canada Bank Note Co.; (16) a provisional letter of resignation dated May 13, 1887, from CBNCo Secretary-Treasurer Hermann Drechsel; (17) a holograph letter from CBNCo President Desbarats to Smillie's agent regarding his possible resignation prior to a forthcoming stockholders' meeting; (18) publication of two announcements in the Montreal Gazette June 25, 1887, regarding the resignation May 20, 1887, of CBNCo President George E. Desbarats; (19) an executed and sealed power of attorney dated Nov. 25, 1887, by W.C. Smillie empowering his nephew G.F.C. (Fred) Smillie to transfer or dispose of all his capital stock in Canada Bank Note Co.; (20) a letter of introduction for G.F.C. Smillie on Park Avenue Hotel stationery; (21) a March 20, 1888, letter on George Bishop Engraving and Printing Co., Montreal, letterhead from Bishop to G.F.C. Smillie regarding the reorganization of the Canada Bank Note Co.; (22) the April 1946 issue of Collectors Club Philatelist, published by the Collectors Club of New York, which includes a portion of Clarence W. Brazer's celebrated study on U.S. stamp and banknote designers and engravers. This segment includes summaries of the organization of several bank note companies, including Canada Bank Note Co. which was organized by W.C. Smillie. (Total: 22 items)
