Iconic Mercury Holding Globe Design

Spain Banco de Espana 1000 Pesetas 10.5.1907 Pick 61a PMG About Uncirculated 55.
Without question, this design is the pinnacle of work by the Bank of Spain, and one of the most beautiful designs issued anywhere in the world. The face is printed in a stunning black and blue-green hue, featuring Mercury holding a globe at left. The Art Nouveau style was less than two decades old, but taking over Europe. Few banknote makers broke with tradition to include this art style, making this note a standout in terms of artistic style. The back design is seemingly more traditional, with an allegorical woman on a throne at center, flanked by a seated lion.

This note is all the more important in Spanish history due to its rarity. Just 500,000 notes were printed, a tiny sum compared to other 1000 Pesetas issues. This piece is a rarely seen problem free example, with no Uncirculated notes appearing in the population reports of the major grading services. The combined rarity and aesthetics will make this one of the most popular notes offered in the Cid-Pulido Collection. Simply stunning in every way.
