An Elusive African Scarcity

Rwanda Banque D'Emission Du Rwanda Et Du Burundi 500 Francs 15.05.1961 Pick 4a PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The Banque D'Emission Du Rwanda Et Du Burundi was established in 1960, this was also the time that the Belgian Congo Franc was replaced by the Rwanda and Burundi Franc. In 1964, provisional notes were created for Rwanda and Burundi respectively. For Rwanda, the lower denominations were handstamped to denote issuance in Rwanda, and the higher denominations were embossed to indicate place of issuance. Lilac-brown with black rhinoceros on the face. Embossing with "Banque Nationale Du Rwanda" is noticed, and stamped over a picture of a rhino. This issue was very short-lived, and was eventually replaced in the same year of 1964 with a new issue that read only Rwanda. An exceptional rarity that is the single highest graded example on the PMG Population Report.
