Description
Excessively Rare Emergency Issue From Gilbert & Ellice Islands
Gilbert and Ellice Islands British Administration 1 Pound
1.1.1942 Pick 5 PCGS Fine 15.A classic British Commonwealth rarity, issued during WWII by the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony Government. Hastily made, with only a lightly embossed seal and hand-stamped serial number, these issued circulated until more substantial currency products could be delivered. This former British Colony is now Kiribati and Tuvalu, which are sparsely populated and quite remote by modern standards. The sheer fact that this emergency issue currency note has survived is nothing short of a miracle. Interestingly, this note is embossed Court of H.B.M. High Commissioner for the Western Pacific. Seldom encountered, with very few examples remaining in private hands. This example is stamped serial number "630". Despite circulation and comments of minor stains, small rust stains, and pinholes; there is crispness to the paper and its originality can be seen through the third party holder. An exciting opportunity.
