Rare 1873 Convertible Issue 5 Yen

Japan Greater Japan Imperial National Bank, Tokyo #15 5 Yen ND (1873) Pick 12 JNDA 11-12 PMG Very Fine 30.
Rare in any form, this extraordinary Tokyo Branch #15 example is tied for the highest grade with only one other in the PMG Population Report. A contributing factor to the scarcity of these early National Bank notes was the paper quality, which was fragile and quickly became unusable after a limited time in circulation. Luckily this example was only lightly circulated and kept in a well preserved state. Visually appealing, the front of this 5 yen features dual vignettes of rice planting and harvesting and the back depicts the Nihonbashi Bridge in Tokyo with Mount Fuji in the background flanked by the 1870 5 yen gold coin. Highly desirable and will make a great centerpiece in any collection.

PMG Very Fine 30。
