Description
King of Small Size 1933 $10 Silver
Fr. 1700 $10 1933 Silver Certificate. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63
EPQ.Fancy serial number A00002000A adorns this 1933 $10. It was last auctioned in our April 2006 CSNS auction. It is always a pleasure to catalog 1933 $10 Silvers because of the respect and mystique they have in the hobby. Several informative articles about them have graced Paper Money, the journal of the Society of Paper Money Collectors, in the last decade. The earliest enumeration we can find for serial 2000 in this lot is on page 32 of the fifth edition, first printing of United States Small Size Paper Money by William P. Donlon. The serial number of the note in this lot was part of the January 13-27, 1934 release of the first brick, serials A00000001A through A00004000A. No additions from the first brick have been made to the SPMC Census since 2013. In total, there were eight releases of Fr. 1700 notes between January and August 1934. All of these notes passed through the teller windows of the Treasury Cash Room which was located in the Treasury Building. From the Treasury Cash Room, these $10s were dispersed to Washington, DC banks or to walk-in customers. This design sports an obligation clause printed over the Treasury Seal that is not found on any other design. Also, it has the unique payable clause that reads, "Payable In Silver Coin To Bearer On Demand." This payable clause would become a strike against the 1933 $10 Silvers because the upcoming Series 1934 Silvers had a more generic payable clause of, "In Silver Payable To The Bearer on Demand." Series 1933 $10s were in circulation for only a short time when President Franklin Roosevelt issued a presidential directive on March 12, 1934 that effectively ended their issuance and led to their replacement by the Series 1934 Silver Certificates when they came off of the presses. The Series 1933 $10 Silvers that were released into circulation were energetically removed and destroyed. This left only 15,322 notes circulating as of July 1935. This month also saw the separate redemption tracking of the 1933s discontinued. The SPMC Census for Fr. 1700 stands at 133 as of January 2024. However, PMG has graded only 30 pieces at 63 EPQ and above. Nonetheless, there are not nearly enough examples to supply all of the collectors who desire an example of the "King of Small Size."
