Description

Tied with One Other Friedberg Number for Rarest of the $5, $10, and $20 Red Seal FRNs

Fr. 952b $20 1914 Red Seal Federal Reserve Note PMG Extremely Fine 40.
One of only six Fr. 952b notes listed in Track & Price, the example in this lot is tied with only one other as the highest graded not only in T&P, but also in the PMG Population Report. Of those six notes, only two have appeared at auction since 1992. In fact, this is the only example of this Friedberg number that we have ever auctioned.

The Boston $20 in this lot brought $138,000 when we auctioned the collection of Tom Flynn in April 2008. Tom had acquired it earlier at a local auction in 1982. The next time that it crossed the auction block was when we offered it in April 2013 and it realized $49,937. This price is now listed in the latest 23rd edition of the Friedberg reference with the added comment of, "Extremely Rare." We also studied the population figures for the Red Seal FRNs in T&P and discovered that both Fr. 952b and 960b have the lowest population figure of six for the $5, $10, and $20 denominations. Therefore, it will be very interesting when the gavel falls on this note that combines both rarity and grade.
