Description

Ex: Grinnell Fr. 203 One of Only Six Available to Collectors

Fr. 203 $50 1863 Interest Bearing Note PMG Very Fine 25.
A rare Friedberg number with a population of only seven that we can confirm among the two main censuses. Only a paltry six of those are available for collectors to pursue, as one Fr. 203 resides in the Smithsonian Institution. The example in this lot, with serial number 20569-B, returns to the numismatic community after last being offered at auction in June 1987. It has an illustrious provenance that begins with being lot 229 in the first auction session of The Albert A. Grinnell Collection held on November 25, 1944. It was won by F.C.C. Boyd and went on to be offered by the New Netherlands Coin Company. The next owner of record was Robert Friedberg, followed by Amon Carter, Jr., with our consignor acquiring it at the Memphis International Paper Money Show auction conducted by Hickman & Oakes on June 19-20, 1987. This $50 is also the plate note in both the Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money by Gene Hessler and in the Standard Catalog of United States Paper Money by Chester L. Krause and Robert F. Lemke. The example in this lot may not have any coupons, which is usually the case for Fr. 203, but it is a nice note for the grade with a well executed restoration that consists of sealing a top edge split that runs through the first digit of the serial number at upper right. Our last offering of a Fr. 203 occurred in October 2021. That PMG VF 30 piece had soiling at far right and realized $96,000. Our current offering has a little lower grade, but this mid-grade beauty may very well top that three year old figure.
