40.A very attractive example of this unredeemable high denomination note that, unlike many of its counterparts, has managed to avoid being punch or roulette cancelled. It has been pen cancelled in red ink on the face, but otherwise, it is unimpaired with excellent color. These high denomination pieces were never meant to circulate and were non-negotiable, having been used to settle debts within the Federal Reserve System, as evidenced by the endorsements on the reverse, with one from the New York Fed paying the note to the National City Bank of New York and a second endorsement by that bank depositing the note back in to the New York Fed at a later date.
