Description
20th Century Rarity 1934 $10 North Africa Star Note
Newly Discovered in New England Cash Hoard
Fr. 2308* $10 1934 Mule North Africa Silver Certificate. PMG
About Uncirculated 53.From 1942 to 1944, the $1, $5, and $10 North Africa Silver Certificates were printed for use by U.S. troops fighting in North Africa, Sicily, and even Italy. The yellow seal differentiated them from regular Silver Certificates, which had a blue Treasury Seal on the right. The different design was a currency control measure that allowed demonetization if large quantities of the notes fell into enemy hands, rendering them worthless.
The Series authorized was to be dated 1934A. However, some 20,000 to 40,000 notes were printed with the 1934 $10 plates. Fewer than 100 of the Series 1934 notes are listed in the census, and even fewer Star notes were printed. To date, we know of about eight examples, most in the Very Fine range. This newly discovered example will be the highest grade ever offered at auction at About Uncirculated 53. To date, nothing above Very Fine 30 has been offered. That example realized $28,800 in our 2019 ANA Platinum Night Auction.
The fact so few of these Star Notes are known makes them a 20th-century rarity. The 1934 $10 North Africa Silver Certificates are about as rare as the 1933 $10 Silvers, and the Stars are an anomaly. The note was discovered in a cash hoard in New England. None of the notes in the hoard were dated after Series 1934A, suggesting the notes were squirreled away in the mid-1940s and undisturbed until their discovery 80 years later. The paper is pleasing, with incredibly bright paper and overprint.
