Description

Fr. 749 $2 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note PMG Uncirculated 62.
The vignette on the back is of a battleship of the New York class. There were only two ships of this class, the USS New York and USS Texas. It is claimed that the vignette is actually of the New York due to minor differences between the two dreadnoughts. Both of these ships entered service in 1914 and immediately served in the occupation of Veracruz, Mexico as a response to the Tampico Affair. Both battleships would go on to see duty in the North Sea during World War I. During World War II, their wartime roles were primarily escorting convoys and serving as naval artillery. New York supported Operation Torch in North Africa and then was transferred to the Pacific Theatre where she supported the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Okinawa. The Texas supported Operation Torch, Operation Overlord, and Operation Dragoon in Europe. It also sailed to the Pacific Theatre and was also engaged at the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Post-war, New York was used as a target ship in the nuclear weapons Operation Crossroads tests in mid-1946 and was later sunk in 1948 in another target ship role. The Texas enjoyed a different post-war life as it was converted into a museum ship and today remains permanently moored at San Jacinto State Park near Houston. The Battleship Deuce in this lot was previously mounted.
