Serial Number 1 San Francisco $1,000
Unique in Private Hands

Serial Number 1 Fr. 2211-L $1,000 1934 Light Green Seal Federal Reserve Note. PMG Very Fine 25.
Certainly one of the highlights of tonight's auction session, particularly to small size specialists, is this wonderful serial number 1 Series 1934 $1,000 FRN from the San Francisco district. Significantly, it is the only reported number 1 $1,000 Federal Reserve Note outside of government hands. For example, the Smithsonian Institution does have number 1 Series 1928 and Series 1934 examples from the Chicago district in their holdings. Considering that only a combined total of 24 serial number 1's were printed for both series, this offering is a true miracle of survival. While one might think that a note of this caliber would have been tucked shortly after its issuance, interestingly, that is not the case here. The note did spend a significant amount of time in circulation before being spotted by a sharp-eyed collector. Nevertheless, it faces up rather nicely with excellent color for the grade. PMG has noted a couple of repaired edge splits, but the repairs are very minor and not at all distracting. This is simply a great note that is destined to be a centerpiece of the next collection it enters.
