Description
Fr. 1509 $2 1953 Legal Tender Notes. A-A Block. Uncut Sheet of 18. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.Sheets of 18 have the serial numbers advanced by 8000 per note vertically down the columns. This sheet, comprised of 1953 $2 Legals, bears serial number 71 on its first note at upper left. Uncut sheet sales were halted on January 6, 1954. The following story is told to explain this: 'One night, the new Secretary of the Treasury, George M. Humphrey, was having dinner at a Washington, DC, restaurant. At a nearby table a man proceeded to pull out an uncut sheet and started to cut notes off of it to pay his bill. Mr. Humphrey was so infuriated by this action that he had sales of uncut sheets stopped.' PMG mentions tears and foreign substance.
