Description

First Print Misaligned Fr. 73 $5 1880 Legal Tender PMG Choice About Unc 58.
A misalignment error where the first printing of the back was executed a little high. Both face printings were printed correctly. This plate letter C error with a partial 52 plate number at bottom center exhibits along the top edge on the back a slice of the adjacent top note that includes a little of the ornamentation plus the Bureau of Engraving & Printing imprint. The corresponding area along the bottom edge was cut off. The third party label cites that this note has "great embossing" and was previously mounted. The "great embossing" comment is due to the fact that almost every star in the Treasury seal is embossed on the back. Also, by matching up the margins and edges, we have determined that this is the plate note on page 63 of the second edition of US Error Note Encyclopedia by Stephen M. Sullivan. The plate note in this lot is classified as a minor misalignment in the Sullivan reference. He goes on to say that major misalignments are unknown on large size currency and that moderate misalignments are known, but rare. Nonetheless, the error in this lot does show a portion of a second note.
