Excessively Rare Rhode Island $50 Brown Back - One of Two Known
Providence, RI - $50 1882 Brown Back Fr. 509 The Providence
National Bank Ch. # 1302 PMG Very Fine 20.This great Rhode Island rarity is one of only two $50 Brown Backs reported for all banks in the state. While nine banks in Rhode Island issued this type and denomination, the only known examples are from this Providence bank. Last on the market in a 2014 auction where it sold for over $10,000, it is a hugely margined piece with excellent color for the grade and dark pen signatures. PMG mentions minor restorations, but nothing is at all distracting on this pretty mid-grade note. This is a wonderful example from this New England State that will certainly be a highlight of the next collection it enters.
