Excessively Rare Oregon $50 Brown Back - One of Two Known

Portland, OR - $50 1882 Brown Back Fr. 515 The First National Bank Ch. # 1553 PMG Very Fine 20.
An incredible Oregon rarity, this is one of just two $50 Brown Backs reported for the entire state. Just five banks in Oregon issued this type and denomination to the tune of a mere 7,600 notes. Today, just two pieces are in the census - a circulated example from Heppner which made its last public appearance in a 2006 auction, and this Portland $50 which last crossed the auction block in 1997. It traces its provenance to the first Hickman-Oakes sale in 1976 where it appeared as Lot 182 and sold for all of $327. It is a well margined note with solid paper, pleasing color, and legible stamped signatures. This is a wonderful Oregon rarity fit for the finest of collections.
