First Ever Public Offering

Vergennes, VT - $5 1875 Fr. 404 The Farmers NB Ch. # 2475 PMG Extremely Fine 40.
A great note from an excessively rare Vermont bank from which an example has never been publicly offered. The Farmers National was the second, and smaller, of two note issuers to operate in this central Vermont community. It issued just First Charter and Second Charter notes before failing in 1901, undoubtedly due to the local economic decline caused by railroads supplanting the local canal system. To date, just three notes, all Series 1875 $5s, are listed in the census but one of those pieces appears without a grade or serial number, making its existence problematical and the other two notes have never been available to collectors at public sale. Tonight, we are pleased to present a newly reported specimen that has everything going for it - blazing ink colors, bold signatures, and only minimal traces of circulation. A great Vermont rarity worth whatever it costs to bring it home tonight.
