Excessively Rare New Market, VA Note - One of Two Reported
New Market, VA - $20 1902 Plain Back Fr. 657 The First National
Bank Ch. # (S)10568 PMG Very Fine 20.This is one of the great Virginia rarities as it is one of just two pieces reported from this community's sole issuer, a short-lived institution that was only in business for four years before disappearing forever in 1918. This $20 made its first public appearance in a 1998 auction and was last on the market in our 2011 Central States auction. The only other note reported from this tough charter is another similarly graded $20 Plain Back that last crossed the auction block five years ago. Tonight's offering is a most attractive piece with bright inks and paper along with sharp two color signatures, one signed and one stamped.
