Mandan, ND - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 605 The Merchants National Bank Ch. # (W)10604 PCGS Apparent Extremely Fine 45.This downright rare Morton County bank was only in business for nine years before the receiver arrived in 1923 during the agricultural depression of the 1920s. This lovely note is one of just five notes reported, none of which have crossed the public auction block in a dozen years. It is a boldly printed and well embossed $5 with vivid color and clear signatures, including the dark pen signature of the bank's vice-president. It would have likely received the PPQ designation from PCGS if not for some minor paper clip rust and a small internal tear.
