Richmond, VA- A.E. Whitten & Co. 40¢ Oct. 16, 1861 Jones-Littlefield PR60-926 Remainder PMG Very Fine 20.We have been unable to find much information on this firm. The mention of Wall Street on this note suggests a linkage of some kind to the issues of I.C. Whitten, whose location was listed as the St. Charles Hotel, located at the corner of Wall and Main Streets according to an 1860 City Directory. While labeled a Remainder, this is likely a note that was issued without a serial number or with a serial number that faded. In any case, this is a rare odd denomination note that is seldom seen, with Jones estimating a surviving population of 5-9 examples.
