Printing Plate Richmond, VA- Virginia Treasury Note $50 Oct. 15, 1862 Cr. 7 Not Graded.
A steel printing plate for this $50 state issue that has a portrait of James M. Mason, United States senator from Virginia during the years 1847-61. Mason became a Confederate diplomat when the Civil War started. Mason was captured along with fellow Confederate diplomat John Slidell on their way to England aboard the RMS Trent. This diplomatic incident became known as the Trent Affair. Mason and Slidell were eventually freed from United States imprisonment and set sail a second time to England. Mason would go on to represent the Confederacy in England and later in France, as he unsuccessfully sought diplomatic recognition for the Confederacy. The vignette on this plate letter A printing plate is the same as appears on Confederate T17 notes with Ceres seated between Commerce and Navigation. Overall dimensions of the printing plate are approximately 9.25 by 3.75 inches. The printing plate is not graded, but has rust spots.
